Gas Pipeline Vandalism Triggers Major Drop in National Grid Power Output

ABUJA – Electricity generation on Nigeria’s national grid dropped sharply below 3,500 megawatts on Tuesday, as gas supply constraints forced multiple power plants to shut down or drastically reduce output.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) attributed the decline to gas pipeline vandalism within upstream networks, which disrupted fuel supply to gas-fired generation facilities. By 9:00 PM, the load available to distribution companies had fallen to 3,285MW.

In response, NISO activated contingency measures, including increasing dispatch from hydroelectric stations and implementing voltage control interventions to maintain grid stability. The operator stated it is working with stakeholders to address the gas supply challenges, especially with the heightened electricity demand expected during the festive season.

This incident highlights the persistent vulnerability of Nigeria’s power sector to gas supply disruptions and infrastructure sabotage. NISO assured consumers of its commitment to proactive grid management but emphasized the need for stronger coordination to secure gas supplies.
