Ghana Pledges to Buy Fuel from Dangote Refinery

The Government of Ghana has formally committed to importing petroleum products from Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos.

The announcement was made by the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority, Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, at the Nigerian International Energy Summit in Abuja. He cited Ghana’s insufficient domestic refining capacity as the primary reason for the move.

Tameklo stated that Ghana’s two small refineries cannot meet local demand, making the country a strong offtake market for the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote facility. He revealed that extensive engagements with the refinery have already begun.

“Given the proximity between Ghana and Nigeria, increased reliance on Nigeria’s refined petroleum products will help us reduce the cost of fuel delivered to Ghana,” Tameklo explained. He emphasized the need for stable macroeconomic conditions and uniform regulation across West Africa to facilitate trade.

In a related interview, Dangote Group’s Vice President for Oil and Gas, Devakumar Edwin, confirmed the refinery’s capacity to meet both Nigerian and export demands. He noted that Nigeria requires only about 50% of the refinery’s current output, leaving significant volume for regional supply.
