Governors Push for Immediate State Police Establishment to Tackle Insecurity

Nigerian governors have renewed their urgent demand for the swift establishment of state police forces, citing the escalating insecurity crisis overwhelming federal security agencies.

The call comes amid relentless banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and communal violence that have stretched the Nigeria Police Force beyond effective capacity. Governors argue that centralized policing has proven inadequate for addressing localized security threats requiring rapid, community-specific response.

State executives insist that constitutional amendments enabling state-controlled police units would complement federal efforts, improve intelligence gathering, and ensure accountability to local populations. They point to successful community security initiatives in states like Amotekun in the South-West as evidence that regional policing models can yield results.

The push faces historical resistance from federal authorities concerned about potential misuse by state political actors. However, governors counter that robust oversight frameworks and federal coordination mechanisms can prevent abuse while delivering urgently needed security dividends.

Analysts say the mounting casualty toll from insurgency, farmer-herder clashes, and armed robbery has shifted public opinion toward decentralised policing. The National Assembly is expected to reconsider constitutional amendments on state police when sessions resume.
