The newly inaugurated NBA President promises a “bolder Bar” and unveils comprehensive welfare and reform agenda.
Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, has formally assumed office as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), declaring her determination to leave the institution stronger than she met it .
In her inaugural address during the NBA’s 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Badejo-Okusanya, who is the second woman to lead the association in its history, vowed to build a “bolder Bar that works for everyone” .
“May it be said, when this tenure is over, that the Bar became bolder; that lawyers felt seen, protected and empowered; and that we left the Nigerian Bar Association stronger than we met it,” she stated .
The new president outlined an ambitious agenda centred on economic welfare, professional dignity, and institutional independence . She pledged that the NBA would “speak truth to power” and “not be captured by any government, party, region, religion, interest or individual” .
Her administration plans to deliver a technology-driven overhaul of NBA services, introduce subsidised electronic law reports, and revive the NBA affinity card providing discounts on essential services . Healthcare partnerships are also on the cards, including discussions with the African Medical Centre of Excellence for discounted wellness screenings for lawyers .
Badejo-Okusanya, who won the election with 12,317 votes, received the handover from outgoing President Afam Osigwe, SAN, who urged members to rally behind her, emphasising that her victory was based on competence rather than tokenism .
