Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) have launched a joint investigation into an alleged security breach of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) portal, in a development that has raised serious concerns about the integrity and safety of Nigeria’s electoral data infrastructure.
The investigation, confirmed by official sources, follows reports of an unauthorised intrusion into the CVR portal — a critical digital platform used by millions of Nigerians to register as voters and update their electoral information ahead of future elections.
INEC and the DSS have assured Nigerians that the alleged breach is being treated with the utmost urgency and seriousness, with cybersecurity experts and intelligence operatives already deployed to assess the full scale of the suspected intrusion and determine what, if any, sensitive voter data may have been compromised.
The electoral commission further stressed that it is committed to maintaining the integrity, confidentiality, and security of Nigeria’s voter database, describing the protection of electoral data as a non-negotiable cornerstone of the country’s democratic process.
Cybersecurity analysts have warned that any successful breach of the CVR portal could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s 2027 elections, potentially exposing millions of voters’ personal data and undermining public confidence in the electoral system.
Civil society organisations and opposition political parties have called for full transparency in the investigation, demanding that INEC and the DSS provide Nigerians with a comprehensive and honest account of what occurred, the extent of any data exposure, and the steps being taken to prevent future breaches.
The National Assembly is also said to be monitoring the situation closely, with lawmakers considering summoning INEC officials for a formal briefing on the alleged portal breach and the commission’s cybersecurity protocols.
INEC has urged registered voters to remain calm, assuring the public that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard the integrity of the voter registration process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
