INEC TO PARTIES: WE WON’T ALLOW YOU ERODE DEMOCRATIC VALUES

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to political parties, declaring that it will not tolerate any actions that erode democratic values and undermine the nation’s electoral process.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, issued the warning during a meeting with political party leaders in Abuja on Wednesday. He stressed that the commission would enforce strict adherence to electoral laws and hold parties accountable for any violations, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

“We will not allow any political party to erode the democratic values we have collectively built. The era of impunity and disregard for internal party democracy is over,” Yakubu stated.

The INEC boss highlighted concerns over the conduct of party primaries, imposition of candidates, and the disregard for constitutional provisions by some parties. He warned that the commission would invoke its powers to sanction any party found guilty of electoral malpractices or actions that threaten the integrity of the electoral process.

Political parties in attendance pledged to cooperate with INEC, while some representatives raised concerns about the cost of elections and the need for further electoral reforms.

The commission also announced plans to intensify voter education and deploy technology to enhance transparency in future elections.
