JUSUN Accuses Govt of Making Misleading Claims, Says No Salaries Released for March, April

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Abia State Branch, has rejected the state government’s assertions regarding the ongoing industrial action, insisting that the judiciary is yet to receive full financial autonomy as required by the Constitution.

In a detailed response to a government statement, JUSUN described claims of “substantial compliance” with judicial autonomy as “untenable.” The union noted that the current practice, where funds are released at the discretion of the Accountant-General, does not satisfy constitutional requirements.

JUSUN further revealed that as of the date of its statement (May 1, 2026), the government had failed to release salaries and overheads for the judiciary for the months of March and April 2026, including funds for official engagements such as seminars and training for judges, magistrates, and staff.

Key Issues Re-Stated

The union clarified that leave allowance remains a statutory entitlement under the Public Service Rules and cannot be extinguished. It dismissed the government’s suggestion that full implementation of judicial autonomy requires a constitutional amendment, calling the claim “incorrect and laughable.”

On verification, JUSUN insisted that the exercise falls strictly within the constitutional mandate of the Judicial Service Commission, not external consultants.

JUSUN reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement but warned that the strike would continue until concrete actions and full implementation of agreed obligations are achieved.
