…Family Alleges Defilement and Cover-Up, Suspect Remains at Large

A traditional ruler, identified as the head of the Igala community in Lagos, Muhammed Salifu, has been accused of defiling a teenager, impregnating her, and leaving her with lasting reproductive injuries following a traumatic caesarean section .

CDA News Nigeria reports that the teenager’s mother, Mrs Elizabeth Yakubu, recounted the horrific ordeal to Sunday PUNCH. The family trusted Salifu after he offered to help their daughter, born on January 3, 2008, learn a tailoring trade . However, in December 2023, while the family waited at a hotel reception in Ojota, Lagos, the 58-year-old chief allegedly took the teenager upstairs, locked the door, and forced himself on her . She was allegedly assaulted again later that month .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the teenager became pregnant, and Salifu initially denied responsibility. When confronted by village elders, he reportedly pleaded for time and even offered N50,000 for an abortion, which the family refused . The delivery proved traumatic; the teenager required a caesarean section, but the newborn died after seven days. Her mother alleged that complications from the surgery left her daughter’s womb damaged and her abdomen persistently swollen . The family also attributed the death of the teenager’s father to the stress of the situation .

A petition was filed with the Ketu Police Station and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency . As of this report, Salifu has not been arrested. He has denied the allegations, claiming they are a political vendetta and asserting he intended to marry the girl, whose age he falsely placed at 22 . The case remains under investigation.
