Labour Party in Turmoil as Factions Clash Over Legitimate Leadership

The Labour Party leadership crisis has intensified, with the faction led by Julius Abure and a rival group led by Senator Nenadi Usman exchanging sharp accusations of being “impostors.”

The Abure faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, publicly dismissed the Usman-led interim National Executive Committee (NEC) as “nonexistent and illegal,” stating it is not recognized by INEC or the party’s constitution. “These people are impostors,” Ifoh declared.

In a swift rebuttal, Prince Tony Akeni, spokesman for the Usman faction, called Ifoh’s statements “false and misleading.” Akeni claimed a Supreme Court judgment from April 4, 2025, affirms the legitimacy of their NEC, noting that Usman has prevailed in all legal challenges against the Abure group.

Further complicating the dispute, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State denied reports that Usman had defected to their party. They clarified her role was as a coordinator for a multi-party coalition, not as a member.

This public feud deepens the rift within the party, casting a shadow over its cohesion and preparedness for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
