Labour Party Postpones Congresses, Convention

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Labour Party (LP) has announced the postponement of its ward, local government, and state congresses as well as its national convention, citing the need for broader consultations and organizational restructuring ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), the leadership explained that the decision was made to ensure a more inclusive and credible process. The congresses, earlier scheduled to begin this month, have now been shifted to a later date, which will be communicated in due course.

“The party is committed to building a stronger and more united front. We believe that proper consultations and internal alignment are necessary to achieve the transparent and democratic processes our members deserve,” the statement read.

The postponement comes amid ongoing efforts by the Labour Party to solidify its structures across the country following its impressive performance in the 2023 elections. The party has been working to expand its grassroots presence and resolve internal disputes ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Party loyalists have expressed mixed reactions, with some supporting the decision as a step toward unity, while others raised concerns about potential delays in preparations for 2027.

The Labour Party leadership assured members that new dates would be announced soon and urged all stakeholders to remain focused on the party’s collective goals.
