Lawmakers Review Defence Laws Amid Insecurit

The House of Representatives has initiated moves to review Nigeria’s existing defence laws in a bid to enhance the country’s security architecture and tackle the growing wave of insecurity.

The proposed legislative review is expected to address emerging security threats, improve the operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, and strengthen the legal framework guiding defence operations across the country.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the persistent cases of terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence, stressing the need for laws that reflect current security realities.

According to the legislators, updating the nation’s defence legislation will provide security agencies with clearer mandates, improve coordination among relevant institutions, and ensure a more robust response to threats against national peace and stability.

The move comes amid increasing calls from Nigerians for decisive actions to safeguard lives and property and restore public confidence in the country’s security system.

If successfully implemented, the proposed reforms could mark a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to confront evolving security challenges and protect its citizens.
