Makinde Insists Oyo PDP Congress Stands

IBADAN, NIGERIA – Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that the November congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state remains valid, insisting that the party will maintain its strong presence on the ballot in future elections.

Speaking during a meeting with party stakeholders in Ibadan on Wednesday, Makinde dismissed any attempts to invalidate the congress, which produced the current executive committee in the state. He described the exercise as free, fair, and in full compliance with the PDP constitution.

“The November congress stands. We will not allow anyone to destabilize our party in Oyo State. We remain strong and ready for any election,” Makinde stated.

The Governor’s remarks come amid ongoing internal tensions within the PDP, particularly between factions loyal to the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the camp of Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike. Makinde has maintained his alignment with the Wike faction, which has been at odds with the party’s national leadership.

Makinde also reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots mobilization, vowing that Oyo PDP would continue to dominate elections in the state. He called on party members to remain united and focused on delivering democratic dividends to the people.

The PDP national leadership has yet to officially respond to the Governor’s declaration.
