Fix Network Failures or Face Sanctions, FG Warns MTN, Airtel, Glo, 9mobile

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a final warning to major telecommunications operators, including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom (Glo), and T2 (formerly 9mobile), to immediately improve their network quality or face severe regulatory sanctions.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, issued the ultimatum on May 10, 2026, stating that the government has fulfilled its obligations by stabilizing the sector through tariff adjustments and classifying telecom infrastructure as critical national infrastructure.

According to Dr. Tijani, these reforms have boosted operator profitability, leaving no further excuses for poor call quality, dropped calls, and slow internet services across Nigeria.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been empowered to enforce strict compliance and apply penalties for defaulting operators.

This directive follows the April 2026 order compelling operators to automatically compensate subscribers for network failures.
