ABUJA – The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has strongly criticized the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), accusing it of betraying President Bola Tinubu. The allegation follows the United States’ decision, under President Donald Trump, to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) due to alleged religious persecution.
In a statement released on Friday, MURIC’s Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, condemned the role he claims some Christian leaders played in petitioning US authorities. He asserted that these actions, which alleged targeted killings of Christians in Nigeria, contributed to the damaging international designation.
MURIC described the CPC label as “blurred, misplaced, and distorted,” arguing that it misrepresents the situation on the ground. The group expressed particular disappointment with CAN for not debunking what it calls a “misleading narrative” of religious violence.
“The portrayal of religious violence in Nigeria was exaggerated,” the statement read. MURIC further claimed that President Tinubu has shown significant favor to Christians in his federal appointments, making CAN’s alleged silence on the petitions an act of betrayal.
“This redesignation is a complete misrepresentation,” said Akintola, vowing to focus attention on the “fifth columnists in our midst.”
CAN has not yet issued an official public response to these specific allegations.
