The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has formally commended the Department of State Services (DSS) for its professional and commendable role in ensuring a peaceful, orderly, and secure atmosphere throughout the association’s 2026 National Convention.
NANS leadership, in a statement released following the conclusion of the convention, described the DSS’s conduct as exemplary — praising the agency’s intelligence-driven approach, discreet professionalism, and effective crowd management that ensured delegates, observers, and participants could engage freely without fear or disruption.
The students’ body noted that the peaceful conduct of the convention was not accidental but the direct result of meticulous security planning and proactive threat management by the DSS — a factor that allowed NANS to conduct its democratic processes smoothly and without incident.
NANS expressed particular appreciation for the collaborative and respectful manner in which DSS operatives engaged with student delegates throughout the convention period, striking a balance between maintaining security and preserving the open, democratic spirit that defines student association gatherings.
The association further used the occasion to call on the DSS and other security agencies to sustain this professional standard at future student events, youth gatherings, and democratic processes across the country — arguing that security agencies that support rather than suppress civic participation strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
NANS also acknowledged the contributions of other security agencies and stakeholders whose cooperation contributed to the overall success of the 2026 convention.
Student union observers say the commendation reflects a growing maturity in the relationship between Nigeria’s organised student movement and the country’s security architecture — a development that bodes well for student democratic participation going forward.
