Port Harcourt, Nigeria — The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the decision by the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) to dissolve the institution’s Students’ Union Government (SUG), describing the action as undemocratic and contrary to students’ rights.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that NANS called on the university management to immediately reverse the decision and engage students through dialogue. The association warned that dissolving the union could undermine students’ representation and participation in campus governance.
The development has sparked reactions among students and stakeholders, with concerns that the move could affect peace and stability within the university community. NANS maintained that students’ unions remain legitimate platforms for promoting welfare, leadership, and constructive engagement with university authorities.
“We strongly condemn the dissolution of the Students’ Union Government and urge the university management to restore the union in the interest of democracy, justice and students’ welfare,” NANS said in a statement.
NANS further stated that it would continue to monitor developments and engage relevant authorities to ensure that the matter is resolved peacefully. The University of Port Harcourt is expected to provide further clarification on the decision as discussions with stakeholders continue.
