The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has pledged to intensify border security following a deadly attack by suspected bandits that killed three of its officers in Kebbi State.
The Comptroller-General of the NIS, Mrs. Kemi Nandap, made the vow during a condolence visit to the Kebbi State Government in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday. She honored the slain personnel as dedicated “brothers, fathers and sons” who worked daily to secure the nation’s borders.
“It is with a deep sense of respect and sober reflection that we gather here today,” Nandap stated. “We are here because of the tragic attack that claimed the lives of our very dedicated and committed officers.”
The attack occurred on the night of Thursday, November 28, when gunmen targeted a checkpoint in the Bakin Ruwa community of Bagudo Local Government Area. The assailants have been linked to the Lakurawa armed group.
While reaffirming the service’s resilience, Nandap acknowledged that Kebbi’s strategic border location, vital for trade and travel, is also exploited by criminal elements. She called for strengthened community engagement to curb irregular migration and bolster security.
“We appeal for your continued support, especially in community sensitisation, because curbing irregular migration requires strong border governance and active community participation,” she said.
In response, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, represented by Deputy Governor Abubakar Umar-Tafida, described the officers as gallant and condoled with their families. He proposed a strategic review, including the establishment of joint security checkpoints, to enhance operational strength and response capabilities.
“This development calls for a rethink of the number and structure of checkpoints we have. Joint checkpoints will provide more strength to counter criminal activities,” the governor said.
The incident underscores the persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s northwestern region, where bandit groups frequently target communities and security forces.
