The terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), took a dramatic turn as his entire legal team, led by former Attorney-General of the Federation Kanu Agabi, withdrew from the case.
The development unfolded at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday. Agabi informed the court he would no longer be representing the defendant, stating that Kanu had “decided to take back the case from them.” This move was followed by all other Senior Advocates of Nigeria on the team also announcing their withdrawal.
Confirming the situation, Nnamdi Kanu told the court he would be representing himself for the time being, noting that his position “might change later.” The trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, offered to assign a lawyer to represent him, but Kanu declined the offer.
Proceeding without legal counsel, Kanu orally moved to open his defence, immediately arguing that the court lacks the jurisdiction to try him. The case continues as the court navigates this new development.
