Northern Governors Issue Stern Warning: “Act Now or Lose the Region” to Insecurity

Governors of Nigeria’s northern states have issued a stark warning that the region is on the brink of losing its future to escalating insecurity and deepening poverty, demanding urgent and decisive action from all leaders.

The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, delivered the grave message at a joint emergency meeting with traditional rulers in Kaduna.

“The North is today confronted with the grim reality of insecurity and poverty that seeks to undermine our very existence,” Governor Yahaya stated. He warned that future generations would judge current leaders harshly if they failed to bequeath a peaceful and prosperous region.

The high-level meeting, attended by 19 governors, security chiefs, and civil society, focused on a coordinated response to terrorism, banditry, and social decay. A key agenda item was a renewed and urgent call for the establishment of state police, which the forum described as a “critical and effective mechanism” to address current security challenges.

The governors pledged to work closely with the Federal Government and urged an end to partisan politics and divisive narratives, framing the crisis as a fight for the survival of the entire region.
