PDP Factions Open Peace Talks as Wike Denies Split

ABUJA, NIGERIA – Factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have opened peace talks aimed at resolving internal conflicts ahead of the party’s national convention, even as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, dismissed claims of a split within the party.

Sources close to the negotiations revealed that back-channel discussions are ongoing between the Wike camp and the party’s national leadership, with both sides expressing willingness to find common ground. The talks are focused on power-sharing arrangements, zoning of key positions, and ensuring a transparent convention process.

Wike, speaking to journalists on Thursday, denied reports that the party was on the verge of a major fracture, describing such claims as “speculative and unhelpful.”

“There is no split in PDP. We are one party, and we will come out stronger after our convention,” Wike stated.

The development follows weeks of tension between the Wike faction and other party leaders, particularly over the national chairmanship position. The PDP’s national convention is scheduled to hold later this month, with party leaders emphasizing the need for unity ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party’s National Working Committee has yet to issue an official statement on the peace talks, but insiders expressed optimism that an agreement could be reached before the convention.
