ABUJA – The President of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Dr. Hassan Makolo, has issued a stark warning about the severe economic hardship facing Nigerian workers.
Speaking in Abuja, Dr. Makolo stated that workers are “suffocating” under the crushing weight of inflation, fuel price hikes, and the devaluation of the naira.
He highlighted that the soaring prices of essential goods like food, transport, and housing have pushed millions of families to the brink, rendering current wages inadequate.
“Our wages no longer reflect the realities of today’s economy. Inflation has wiped out the value of salaries,” Makolo said.
The union leader called on the government to move beyond the traditional minimum wage and implement a “living wage” that adjusts periodically with inflation. He also urged stronger economic policies to stabilize prices and boost local production to ease the burden on citizens.
