PDP In Crisis as Saraki Calls for Convention to be Scrapped

ABUJA – A major crisis is brewing within Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ahead of its planned national convention.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has publicly called for the convention to be canceled, warning that it would deepen the party’s divisions. Instead, he urged the party to establish a National Caretaker Committee to focus on reconciliation and unity.

“The convention has become mired in extensive controversy, both political and legal. This does not bode well for our party,” Saraki stated, highlighting conflicting court orders from courts in Abuja and Ibadan that have cast doubt on the event’s legitimacy.

However, the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Adulphus Wabara, disagreed, asserting that the party’s organs had agreed to proceed with the convention. He described the party’s problems as “self-inflicted injuries” stemming from personal ambitions.

The deepening rift and legal battles threaten to destabilize the party further as it seeks to position itself for future elections.
