Plateau Women Stage Naked Protest Over Removal of Traditional Ruler

Women from the Mushere community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State staged a dramatic nude protest on Thursday, April 16, 2026, demanding the immediate reinstatement of their dethroned traditional ruler, Mishkakam Mushere Julius K. Diblang.

The state government, through the Ministry for Chieftaincy Affairs, removed the monarch earlier in April, citing ongoing insecurity in the chiefdom and allegations of his involvement in conflicts. However, many community members have rejected the decision, describing it as a political witch-hunt and insisting that the ruler had worked tirelessly to restore peace and return displaced persons to their homes.

Armed with placards bearing inscriptions such as “Bring Back Julius Our Chief,” the women marched to the Bokkos council secretariat completely naked, chanting solidarity songs to express their grievances. Video footage of the protest circulated widely on social media, drawing mixed reactions.

One of the protest leaders explained the symbolism behind their action, stating that stripping naked was a deliberate message to Governor Caleb Mutfwang that he had erred in removing the monarch. “This is a message from us to Governor Caleb Mutfwang that he should return Mishkakam Julius Diblang immediately or a big calamity will befall him,” she declared. “The world has seen our nakedness, and those who understand these things will know that you don’t take a woman’s nakedness for granted”.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, Samuel Amalau, described the demonstration as peaceful, adding that security was deployed to calm the situation and prevent escalation.

The protest highlights the deep cultural significance of traditional institutions in the area and reflects growing tensions amid Plateau State’s ongoing security challenges.
