Police Council Confirm IGP Olatunji Disu’s Appointment
By CDA News Nigeria
The National Police Council has unanimously endorsed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, formally ratifying his position as Nigeria’s 23rd indigenous police chief .
The Council, chaired by President Bola Tinubu, convened at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, on Monday, with the confirmation process lasting less than 40 minutes . The meeting complied with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which mandates the Police Council to consider the appointment of an IGP before the President transmits the nominee’s name to the Senate for final confirmation .
President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development to journalists after the meeting. “Yes, they have unanimously endorsed Disu as IGP,” Onanuga stated .
High-Level Attendance
The well-attended session brought together key government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Head of the Civil Service Didi Walson-Jack .
State governors present included AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara/NFG Chairman), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), and Peter Mba (Enugu) . The Deputy Governors of Kogi and Delta States also attended, alongside the Ministers of FCT, Police Affairs, and Interior .
Background and Next Steps
Disu, 59, has been serving in an acting capacity since his appointment on February 24, 2026, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun . A Lagos Island native, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University, as well as Master’s degrees in Public Administration and Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology .
Like his predecessor, Disu served under President Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor from 1999 to 2007, where he functioned as Aide-de-Camp .
With the Police Council’s confirmation secured, President Tinubu will now transmit Disu’s name to the Senate for final confirmation, after which he will fully assume office as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police since Nigeria’s independence in 1960 .
