Power Supply to Improve in 72 Hours, Says Minister

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, says electricity supply will begin to improve within 48 to 72 hours as the Federal Government works to fix generation and transmission constraints behind recent outages.

CDA News Nigeria reports that Tegbe, in a statement titled “Update on Power Situation” posted on his Facebook page on Friday, blamed the worsening situation on planned maintenance at Egbin Power Station in Lagos. The station supplies about 16 per cent of the electricity on the national grid.

CDA News Nigeria gathered that gas supply constraints at some thermal plants and sabotage of critical transmission lines have also cut available power. The sabotage has limited alternative routes, particularly to Lagos. Grid operators have implemented load shedding, and four states, including Lagos and the FCT, are affected.

“My team and I are working to return the affected generating units to service in phases,” Tegbe said.

His assurance comes amid complaints from consumers in Lagos and Ogun over prolonged blackouts.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Ikeja Electric are disputing the cause of the outages. TCN rejected Ikeja Electric’s attribution of the November 3 and 4 outages to grid instability. It said low gas supply and reduced hydroelectric output were responsible.

“TCN can only transmit the energy made available to it,” the company said.

TCN attributed 68 per cent of interruptions on Ikeja Electric feeders to load shedding caused by low generation. It blamed 26 per cent on the distributor’s alleged non-compliance with load allocations, faults and maintenance, and six per cent on its own maintenance and switching operations.

Ikeja Electric had earlier apologised to Band A customers for missing the 20-hour minimum daily supply on those dates.
