Nigerian Former federal lawmaker and climate advocate, Rep. Sam Onuigbo, made a significant mark at the London Climate Action Week, participating in two high-profile events that spotlighted Nigeria’s growing role in global climate action and green investment.
At the prestigious State of Climate Politics event organised by E3G at Mansion House, Onuigbo joined an elite panel of global climate leaders and delivered an intervention on the theme “Reframing Climate Action in the Face of Divided Politics.”
He drew on his experience building the legislative consensus that produced the Nigeria Climate Change Act — a landmark law that continues to shape climate policy across the country.
Fellow panelists included Agnes Dasewicz of the Global Energy Alliance, Jennie King of the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, Mayor Barbara Buffaloe of Columbia, Missouri, Joanne Yawitch of the Just Energy Transition Project Management Unit, and Kate Hampton, CEO of The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.
Later in the evening, Onuigbo convened the Nigeria Climate Investment Summit (NCIS) in partnership with GLOBE Legislators and SOStainability — a flagship event of the London Climate Action Week designed to catalyse climate finance flows and investments into Nigeria.
The summit attracted remarkably high-level participation, including Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu CFR PhD, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Enugu State SSG Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the UK Ambassador Amin Dalhatu, UN Special Representative Damilola Ogunbiyi, Climate Investment Funds CEO Dr. Tariye Gbadegesin, and NDC Partnership Global Director Pablo Vieira, among others.
A major highlight was Governor Sanwo-Olu’s announcement of a Lagos Climate Action Week to be hosted in partnership with GLOBE Legislators, SOStainability, and the London Climate Action Week conveners.
“This is a beginning, but we have already made major plans to further drive action and support innovators and businesses,” Onuigbo stated.
