A Nigerian legislator has underscored the importance of youth participation in tackling climate change during the ongoing London Climate Action Week in the United Kingdom.
The lawmaker, alongside Hon. Cedric Frolick of South Africa, joined British Member of Parliament, Hon. Barry Gardiner, representing Brent West Constituency, at the Student-MP Climate Surgery programme.
Speaking to Year 6 pupils of Chalkhill Primary School, the legislators discussed the growing challenges posed by climate change, the need for immediate action, and the vital role both students and lawmakers must play in safeguarding the environment.
The lawmaker recalled that the Student-MP Climate Surgery initiative, originally established by GLOBE Legislators in 2019, was successfully introduced to Africa in 2022. He expressed optimism that the programme would once again be expanded across the continent as preparations intensify for COP32, scheduled to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
According to him, children remain critical stakeholders in the global climate conversation, stressing that governments, institutions, and communities must work closely with young people to secure a sustainable future.
The engagement formed part of a series of activities bringing together lawmakers, climate advocates, and stakeholders from across the world to discuss practical solutions to climate challenges and strengthen climate education among younger generations.
