Abuja, Nigeria — The House of Representatives has initiated moves to document the losses suffered by Nigerians affected by xenophobic attacks in foreign countries, with lawmakers seeking compensation for victims through diplomatic and legal channels.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the initiative is aimed at compiling verified records of Nigerians who lost lives, property, businesses or other assets during xenophobic attacks, particularly in countries where such incidents have been reported. Lawmakers said the exercise would support efforts to pursue justice and appropriate compensation for affected citizens.
The House expressed concern over the recurring attacks on Nigerians abroad, stressing the need for stronger protection of citizens and greater collaboration between the Federal Government, Nigerian diplomatic missions and host countries.
“The objective is to properly document the losses suffered by Nigerians and ensure that appropriate steps are taken to seek justice and compensation for deserving victims,” lawmakers stated during deliberations.
The proposed initiative is expected to involve relevant government agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), in verifying claims and engaging with affected countries where necessary.
If adopted and implemented, the move could provide a framework for addressing longstanding concerns over the welfare and protection of Nigerians living abroad while strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic response to xenophobic attacks.
