PORT HARCOURT – The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed an assassination attempt on His Royal Majesty, King Suanu Baridam, the Paramount Ruler of Bangha Kingdom in Khana Local Government Area. This marks the second known attempt on the monarch’s life, sparking alarm in the Ogoni region.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the attack occurred on Sunday, January 25, 2026, around 5:30 p.m. on Tekar Sogho Road. King Baridam reported that as he returned from a meeting in Okwale community, unknown gunmen emerged from the bush and opened fire on his black Prado SUV.
“The gunshots shattered the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle. The monarch sustained a gunshot injury to his thigh and is currently receiving medical treatment,” Iringe-Koko stated.
Police teams have been mobilized to comb the area in search of the perpetrators. The Command has vowed to leave no stone unturned in ensuring the attackers are apprehended and prosecuted, urging anyone with useful information to come forward.
The attempted murder of the prominent traditional ruler has heightened security concerns in the state, with community leaders calling for swift action to prevent further attacks.
