The Nigerian Senate has proposed a ₦50,000 fine for individuals found preaching or hawking in commercial buses as part of efforts to improve order, safety, and passenger comfort in public transportation.
CDA News Nigeria gathered that the proposal is contained in a bill currently before the National Assembly seeking to regulate activities in commercial vehicles across the country. The proposed legislation also aims to address issues related to public nuisance and commuter safety.
According to the bill, offenders could face a fine of ₦50,000, while additional penalties may apply depending on the nature of the violation if the legislation is eventually passed into law.
The proposal has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some stakeholders believe it could improve safety and reduce distractions in commercial buses, others have expressed concerns about its potential impact on religious freedom and the livelihoods of street hawkers who depend on bus passengers for their income.
CDA News Nigeria reports that the bill is still undergoing legislative consideration and must pass all required stages in both chambers of the National Assembly before it can be transmitted to the President for assent.
