The Senate on Thursday directed security agencies to identify, track, and arrest bandits and terrorists who openly display criminal activities and ill-gotten wealth on social media, particularly TikTok .
The resolution followed a motion on rising insecurity in Kogi West and other parts of the country, sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi during Thursday’s plenary session .
CDA News Nigeria gathered that during deliberations, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) raised alarm that criminal networks are no longer operating covertly but are leveraging digital platforms to project influence.
“Two days ago, bandits conducted a giveaway, distributing over ₦100 million in 30 minutes through their social media handles, especially TikTok,” she said .
She questioned why security agencies had not tracked such overt digital footprints, urging the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre to apprehend the individuals .
CDA News Nigeria report that Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the online display of criminal activity as a direct challenge to the Nigerian state.
“The Department of State Services should be able to track their movements and arrest them because this is a show of impunity, as if there is no law at all,” Akpabio said .
He warned that such actions undermine public confidence in government institutions and urged security agencies to treat the matter as an urgent national security priority .
