Senate Urges FG to Fix Collapsed Okija Bridge, Restore Vital Anambra Road

ABUJA – The Senate has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene and repair the collapsed old Okija Bridge and the deteriorating Okija Spur Road in Anambra State, a critical corridor that has been impassable for nearly a year.

The resolution followed a motion by Senator Emmanuel Nwachukwu (APGA, Anambra South) on Wednesday. He informed the chamber that the old bridge collapsed on March 5, 2025, “completely shutting down movement, endangering lives and severely disrupting economic and social connectivity” for several communities. The situation is worsened by a new, replacement bridge that has been under construction for over a decade and is only 70% complete.

The Senate specifically urged the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to immediately conduct an engineering assessment and commence emergency remedial works to restore at least temporary safe passage for road users. It mandated its Committee on Works to oversee the intervention.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks, linked the infrastructural failure to security risks, noting that restoring the road is crucial to “curbing the activities of kidnappers and bandits who exploit poor road conditions and isolated communities.”

The move highlights the Senate’s responsiveness to critical infrastructure failures that paralyze local economies and endanger citizens.
