Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, has reportedly dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) just weeks after his controversial defection from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) .
The move comes amid a leadership crisis in the ADC. On April 30, 2026, the Supreme Court referred the party’s leadership tussle back to the Federal High Court, leaving key opposition figures—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor Peter Obi—in political limbo.
A Volatile Political Season
Abaribe, a five-term senator, initially defected from APGA to the ADC in March 2026. That move was immediately challenged by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who cited Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution, requiring lawmakers to vacate their seats unless their original party was in crisis .
APGA has maintained that Abaribe voluntarily resigned and was not expelled, and has continued to call for his seat to be declared vacant . The Senate subsequently delayed action, and the matter has remained unresolved .
With the Supreme Court’s recent decision effectively stalling the ADC’s electoral preparations, Abaribe is now positioning to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—a fast-growing coalition housing fellow APC defectors and opposition leaders.
As the 2027 elections approach, Abaribe’s defection signals further fragmentation and realignment among Nigeria’s opposition political forces.
