The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) took an unusually spiritual turn on Eid-ul-Adha 2026, using the sacred Sallah celebration to not only join in the global Islamic festivities but to lift their long-running renegotiation grievances to a higher power — calling on God to intervene in what the association describes as the Federal Government’s persistent failure to honour its obligations to Nigerian university workers.
In a deeply symbolic gesture that blends faith, frustration, and determination, SSANU’s message on Sallah Day reflected the emotional and psychological toll that years of unresolved renegotiation disputes, unpaid allowances, and broken government promises have taken on university non-academic staff across Nigeria.
The association drew powerful parallels between the spirit of sacrifice and perseverance that defines Eid-ul-Adha and the daily sacrifices made by Nigerian university workers who continue to serve despite poor welfare conditions, stagnant wages, and a Federal Government that repeatedly signs agreements and fails to implement them.
SSANU used the occasion to renew its urgent call on the Federal Government and the relevant ministries to immediately return to the negotiating table and implement all outstanding agreements — warning that the patience of its members, like the patience of all men of faith, has a limit.
The association reminded the government that Nigerian university workers are not just employees — they are the backbone of the country’s higher education system, and their welfare directly impacts the quality of education delivered to millions of Nigerian students every year.
SSANU’s spiritual appeal on Sallah Day signals a deepening of frustration within the university staff community — with the association apparently exhausting conventional pressure tactics and now invoking divine intervention to draw attention to what it describes as the government’s moral failure toward Nigerian university workers.
The Federal Government and the Ministry of Education are yet to respond to SSANU’s Sallah Day appeal at the time of filing this report.
