Umuahia — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Abia State Sector Command, has cautioned motorists against harassing and intimidating cyclists riding on roads across the state, urging them to give bicycle riders adequate space and respect .
Sector Commander Ngozi Ezeoma issued the warning on Wednesday in Umuahia during the celebration of the United Nations World Cycling Day 2026 .
She observed that cyclists struggle to have enough riding space on roads as they are often denied space or disrespected by motorists, a situation she described as unacceptable .
“Motorists must give cyclists adequate space and treat them with courtesy and respect,” Ezeoma said .
The Sector Commander also called on governors, local government chairmen, and urban planners across the country to prioritise the interests of cyclists by ensuring that roads and streets are not designed only for cars but for bicycle riders as well .
“I also urge the state governments, LG chairmen, urban planners, and development partners to prioritise cycling-friendly infrastructure as part of sustainable urban development and also to design streets for people, not just for cars,” she added .
Ezeoma noted that the use of bicycles reduces air pollution and road congestion while enhancing good health for citizens .
However, she warned that cyclists must also obey traffic rules, wear helmets and reflective clothing to be visible on the roads .
Also speaking at the event, Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, urged Abia citizens, especially the youth, to embrace cycling as a means of transportation to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuel.
