Tension in Ondo as Suspected Herdsmen Abduct, Kill Popular Youth Leader Ojo Abbey

Tension has gripped the agrarian community of Isua Akoko, headquarters of Akoko South East Local Government Area of Ondo State, following the abduction and brutal killing of a popular youth leader, Ojo Abbey, popularly known as “Obesere,” by suspected herdsmen .

Abbey was abducted on February 22, 2026, while returning to his community from Ibilo in Edo State. According to residents, armed men suspected to be herdsmen intercepted him and fled into the dense forests bordering Ondo and Edo States .

Despite immediate search efforts by community youths in collaboration with local hunters, the victim could not be found. His decomposing body was later discovered on Saturday in a forest in Igara, Edo State .

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said one suspect has been arrested and is assisting with ongoing investigations. “The incident was reported at Isua Division at about 7:45 pm on February 22, 2026, by a resident who stated that Ojo Abbey was allegedly abducted by armed men suspected to be herdsmen while returning from Ibilo, Edo State,” Jimoh stated .

He added that the victim’s vehicle, a Nissan Almera with registration number KJA 440 DB, was recovered and secured at the station. The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, has ordered intensified surveillance and strategic deployments across the affected area and along the Ondo–Edo boundary to apprehend fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks .

The Isua Youth Forum, in a statement by its National President, Comrade Abimbola Oluwafemi, condemned the killing and called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to urgently intervene. “Every individual involved in this heinous crime must be identified, apprehended, and brought to book. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done,” the forum demanded .
