Timi Frank Backs Senegal’s Speaker Sonko, Accuses President Faye of Betraying Democratic Reform Agenda

Outspoken Nigerian activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Timi Frank, has waded into Senegal’s escalating political crisis — throwing his weight firmly behind National Assembly Speaker Ousmane Sonko while launching a scathing accusation against President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of betraying the bold democratic reform agenda that swept both men to power on a wave of popular enthusiasm and youthful energy.

Timi Frank, known for his fearless and often provocative political commentary on both Nigerian and African affairs, described the unfolding crisis in Senegal as a deeply troubling pattern familiar to Africans — where leaders who ride to power on the backs of popular movements and reform promises quickly abandon their principles once they are comfortably installed in the corridors of power.

Frank accused President Faye of turning his back on the very reform agenda that defined his historic electoral victory — allegedly sidelining his former ally and political partner Sonko in what observers describe as a growing power struggle between two men who were once the twin faces of Senegal’s anti-establishment revolution.

The Nigerian activist expressed strong solidarity with Speaker Sonko, describing him as a symbol of the unfinished democratic reform project that millions of young Senegalese citizens voted for — and warning that any attempt to crush or marginalise Sonko’s influence represents a direct betrayal of the popular will that brought the current administration to power.

Frank drew sharp parallels with Nigeria’s own political experience — where reformist politicians frequently abandon their campaign promises after assuming office, leaving their supporters disillusioned, betrayed, and politically orphaned.

“Africa’s problem is not a lack of good ideas or capable people. Africa’s problem is leaders who forget the people the moment they gain power,” Frank declared passionately.

The activist called on Senegalese citizens, civil society, and the African Union to hold President Faye accountable to the reform agenda he promised — stressing that democratic backsliding in Senegal, one of West Africa’s most stable democracies, would send a deeply damaging signal across the continent.

Timi Frank’s intervention has sparked significant debate on social media across Nigeria and West Africa, with many applauding his pan-African activism while others question the appropriateness of a Nigerian political figure publicly intervening in a sovereign nation’s internal affairs.
