Tinuben, APC Govs Meet in Aso Rock, Agree on Free, Fair Primaries

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu convened a crucial meeting with governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House, Abuja, on Thursday to chart a course for smooth and credible party primaries .

The closed-door session, held at the Council Chamber, focused on preserving the unity and cohesion of the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections . Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, stated that the president “gave us a marching order” to ensure elections are free, fair, and transparent .

Decision on Primaries
President Tinubu reaffirmed the party’s position allowing states to choose between direct primaries or a consensus arrangement, as permitted by the Electoral Act . The primary election timetable has already been released by the party .

Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, noted that the primary goal is to emerge from the process with a party that is “stronger than ever” heading into the next general election .

The high-level gathering was attended by prominent figures including Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) Chairman Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Prof. Babagana Zulum (Borno), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Peter Mbah (Enugu), and Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), among others .
