Tinubu Meets NLC Leaders in Crucial Parley Amid 2027 Talks

President Bola Tinubu and governors under the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) are currently engaged in a crucial parley with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in a meeting widely seen as a strategic move to deepen dialogue ahead of the 2027 general elections .

The high-level summit, taking place at the State House Banquet Hall, has President Tinubu attending as Special Guest of Honour. The invitation extended to the NLC leadership signals an attempt to align governance priorities with workers’ interests amid mounting economic pressures and political recalibration .

Sources within the NLC disclosed that labour leaders plan to personally present their charter of demands to the President during the meeting. The charter reportedly calls for wage increases, protection of jobs and livelihoods amid Nigeria’s economic and climate transitions, and the creation of a dedicated Just Transition Fund .

Other key demands include massive green job creation, reskilling programmes, strengthened social protection mechanisms, and institutionalised tripartite dialogue between government, employers, and labour .

A labour leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the meeting as potentially pivotal. “Wage debates, fuel subsidy removals, and inflation have tested labour-government relations. Direct engagement at Aso Rock signals an attempt to reset the narrative — or prevent escalation,” the source said .

With millions of members across strategic sectors, the NLC remains a powerful mobilisation bloc whose stance can sway public opinion amid economic hardship. Political observers note that the involvement of governors signals coordinated political alignment ahead of the next electoral cycle .

The outcome of this meeting may determine whether negotiation replaces street protests as the main channel of labour influence in the coming months .
