Tinubu’s Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road Directive Revives Hope for Completion

A Former federal lawmaker has praised President Bola Tinubu’s directive to hand over the completion of the Umuahia–Ikwuano–Ikot Ekpene Federal Highway to the Abia State Government, calling it a “considerate step” that revives optimism for the project.

Rep. Sam Onuigbo, the South East representative on the North East Development Commission (NEDC) Governing Board, stated that the President’s intervention shows responsiveness to public concerns and is a practical move to address long-standing infrastructure issues in the region.

The Federal Government has officially handed over the remaining 25 kilometres of the 49.5-kilometre road to the state for completion.

Onuigbo described the highway as a vital economic corridor linking Abia, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and beyond, whose completion will significantly boost regional trade and mobility. He recalled that the push for the road’s rehabilitation began with a motion he sponsored in the House of Representatives back in May 2016.

The lawmaker commended the cooperation between the federal and state governments and urged residents to support the contractors to ensure the project is completed smoothly and on time.
