The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation after the incident which triggered panic among moviegoers and raised fresh concerns about security at entertainment hubs in the state.
Two people have been confirmed dead following a violent attack at IMAX Cinemas in Lekki, Lagos State, on Friday night, August 29, after a man armed with a machete and knife reportedly stormed the premises .
The incident triggered panic among patrons and workers when the suspect, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, allegedly attempted to gain entry into the cinema but was stopped by security guards . Eyewitnesses said the assailant became violent after being prevented from entering .
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, SP Adebisi Abimbola, said the suspect allegedly stabbed one of the security guards to death and injured another security personnel during the attack . The suspect, who appeared to be destitute, was subsequently mobbed and died in the process .

CDA News Nigeria gathered that the Chief Security Officer of the cinema has been taken into custody as part of the investigation . The police are also working to obtain and review closed-circuit television footage from the premises to establish what transpired and identify any other persons who may have been involved .
As of the time of filing this report, the police had not disclosed the identities of the deceased or provided further details on the condition of the injured security guard . The incident has raised concerns over security at entertainment and recreational facilities across Lagos .
