Upsets as ADC dares INEC, concludes convention – Showdown looms!

There was widespread upset on Tuesday as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) dared the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and went ahead to conclude its national convention in Abuja, defying the electoral body’s directive to suspend the exercise.

INEC had earlier issued a statement warning the party against proceeding with the convention, citing unresolved leadership disputes and non-compliance with statutory notice requirements. However, ADC leaders dismissed the directive as “an overreach” and proceeded to elect new national officers.

“The ADC dares INEC and concludes convention because we are a law-abiding party that followed our constitution to the letter. INEC cannot suspend our democratic rights,” said a party chieftain who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The convention, which was held at a private hotel in Abuja, saw the election of a new National Chairman, Secretary, and other executive members. Supporters of the rival Mark faction boycotted the exercise, describing it as “a kangaroo affair” and vowing to challenge the outcome in court.

INEC has yet to officially react to the development, but sources within the commission indicate that the electoral body may refuse to recognize the outcome of the convention, potentially disqualifying the ADC from fielding candidates for elections.

Political analysts warn that the party’s defiance could lead to its deregistration if INEC invokes its powers under the Electoral Act. Meanwhile, the ADC has called on its members to remain calm, insisting that the convention was legitimate and binding.
