US Issues Visa Bans Targeting Perpetrators of Anti-Christian Violence in Nigeria

The United States has announced targeted visa restrictions on Nigerian individuals implicated in violence against Christians, marking a significant escalation in U.S. pressure on Abuja over religious freedom .

Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on December 3 that the new policy, enacted under the Immigration and Nationality Act, blocks entry to the U.S. for individuals “responsible for, or complicit in, egregious acts of violence against Christians and other religious minorities” . The restrictions can also extend to the immediate family members of those targeted and allow for the revocation of existing visas .

The move follows a wave of deadly attacks in states like Plateau and Kaduna, which Washington blames on groups including Fulani militias and the Islamic State West Africa Province . U.S. officials have criticized the Nigerian government for failing to prosecute perpetrators and protect places of worship .

“The United States is taking decisive action in response to the mass killings and violence against Christians,” Secretary Rubio said in a statement, adding that the policy would apply to other governments or individuals engaged in violations of religious freedom globally .

This action coincides with Nigeria’s recent redesignation as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the U.S. over religious freedom violations and follows a directive from President Donald Trump for the Pentagon to draft contingency plans for potential intervention . Nigerian officials have dismissed the characterization, arguing the violence is driven by banditry and resource conflicts rather than religious persecution .

While the State Department did not publicly release names, the policy signals a readiness to use immigration tools to advance human rights objectives, potentially affecting visa processing for broader applicant groups .
