ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Senate has announced that it will pass the N48.47 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill on March 31, 2026, following a brief adjournment for the Sallah break, even as it confirmed several key appointments during Thursday’s plenary .
Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured that standing committees will continue work during the recess, particularly ongoing budget defences and coordination with the Committee on Appropriations to ensure a seamless passage .
“I hope the Leader will put pressure on the Committee on Appropriations to harmonise the report of the 2026 Appropriation by that date. This is so that when we resume, we can try our best to pass the budget without requiring further concurrence or harmonisation,” Akpabio said .
He noted that the House of Representatives has also adjourned to conclude budget processes and will meet on March 31 to pass the national budget in tandem with the Senate .
Confirmations
The Senate confirmed Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar-Sadiq (rtd) as National Commissioner representing the North East at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) . The confirmation followed the Committee on Electoral Matters’ report presented by Senator Simon Lalong, which recommended her based on qualifications, experience, performance, and integrity .
Lawmakers also confirmed Usman Dakingari as Non-Career Ambassador and Ismail Yusuf as Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), following the adoption of the Committee on Foreign Affairs’ report .
Akpabio commended the committees for diligent screening and expressed confidence that the new INEC Commissioner would enhance Nigeria’s electoral system. He also praised President Bola Tinubu for appointing qualified women to key positions .
“I congratulate the nominees and wish them fruitful endeavours in their respective assignments. I also thank Mr. President for selecting the right people for the right appointments,” Akpabio stated .
The confirmations come amid ongoing adjustments in President Tinubu’s cabinet, including the recent confirmation of Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance after nearly three hours of screening by the Senate .
