In a notice issued by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, lawmakers were directed to convene at the National Assembly complex on the instruction of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. No specific reason was stated for the emergency sitting, but it follows heated discussions after the Senate passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill last week.
The bill retained the provision for electronic transmission of results but removed the phrase “in real time,” a decision that has drawn widespread criticism and protests. Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) clarified that over 85% of senators agreed to electronic transmission, with only the “real-time” clause removed due to concerns about network reliability in some areas.
The emergency session is expected to address the escalating public and political reactions to the amended bill, which has become a focal point for civil society demonstrations and demands for greater electoral transparency.
