Peter Obi Joins Protest Demanding Real-Time Electronic Transmission

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has joined the “Occupy National Assembly” protest in Abuja, demanding that the Senate explicitly include mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results in the amended Electoral Act.

Obi, now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stood with civil society groups, opposition members, and women’s groups at the National Assembly gate on Monday. He emphasized that the Senate must prevent a repeat of the technical glitches experienced by INEC in 2023 by making real-time transmission compulsory.

The protest follows the Senate’s passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill last week, which retained discretionary language on result transmission rather than mandating it in real time. Despite clarifications from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, protesters insist on explicit legislative backing for real-time electronic transmission.

Heavy security presence was observed at the scene, with police, army, and civil defence personnel deployed and barricades placed at the assembly entrance. Protest organizers stated they did not intend to enter the premises but would demonstrate at the gate.
