The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened nationwide protests and a potential boycott of elections over what it describes as confusion and contradictory positions by the Senate regarding electronic transmission of election results.
In a statement on Sunday, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed deep concern over the Senate’s failure to clearly state whether electronic transmission would be mandatory in the amended Electoral Act. He warned that legislative ambiguity threatens electoral integrity and public trust.
The NLC demanded that the Senate issue an “immediate, official, and unambiguous account” of the exact provisions passed and ensure the harmonized bill contains clear, mandatory language for real-time electronic transmission.
“Failure to add electronic transmission in real-time will lead to mass action before, during, and after the election or total boycott of the election,” the statement cautioned.
The warning follows the Senate’s passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill last week, which retained discretionary language on result transmission, contrary to the House of Representatives’ version that mandates it. A conference committee will now harmonize both versions.
