ABUJA, NIGERIA — The All Progressives Congress (APC) has mockingly declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is “counting down to its expiration,” citing the mass exodus of its key leaders, unresolved legal crises, and the party’s inability to organize primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections .
In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party described the PDP as a sinking ship from which members are fleeing in droves, leaving it politically comatose and incapable of mounting any credible challenge .
“The PDP is counting down to its expiration. What we are witnessing is not a political party in crisis but a party in terminal coma, kept alive only by the desperate ambitions of a few remaining leaders who refuse to accept that the game is over,” Morka stated .
The APC’s taunt follows a week of devastating blows to the main opposition party, including:
· The defection of Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal
· The resignation of Senator Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto South)
· Senator Austin Akobundu’s departure from Abia Central
· The exit of Senator Ipalibo Banigo (Rivers West)
· Four House of Representatives members dumping the PDP for APC and Accord Party
· Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe’s move from APGA to ADC, further weakening the opposition bloc
· The Court of Appeal judgment nullifying the party’s Ibadan convention
· Leadership crises in several state chapters, including Rivers, Abia, Oyo, and Zamfara
Morka argued that the PDP’s disintegration is proof that Nigerians have lost confidence in the opposition’s ability to provide credible alternatives to the APC-led government.
“With only two governors left standing, a divided National Working Committee, and no clear path to resolving its leadership tussle, the PDP cannot even hold primaries, let alone contest elections. They are counting down to their political funeral, and Nigerians are watching,” Morka added .
The APC also referenced the recent defection of Governor Dauda Lawal, which now leaves only Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as the only PDP governors in the entire country.
“From 13 governors in 2023 to just two in 2026, the PDP’s collapse is complete. The question is not whether they will survive but how soon they will finally admit defeat,” the statement read .
In response, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, dismissed the APC’s comments as “chest-beating” from a party that has failed Nigerians on all fronts.
“The APC should focus on fixing the economy and insecurity instead of celebrating the misfortunes of others. The PDP is not dead; we are restructuring and will bounce back stronger. Nigerians know who has failed them,” Ologunagba countered .
Despite the PDP’s defiance, political analysts note that with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadline for party primaries fast approaching, the party faces an uphill battle to present a united front and field candidates across all levels.
