Court Grants ICPC Access to Analyse Electronic Devices Seized From El-Rufai’s Residence

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) permission to access and forensically analyse electronic devices recovered from the residence of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai .

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik issued the order on Thursday following an ex parte application moved by ICPC counsel, Osuobeni Akponimisingha. The lawyer sought the court’s approval to enable the commission to open, inspect, and conduct forensic extraction of data from the devices as part of its ongoing investigation involving the former governor .

The court authorised the ICPC to access approximately 14 devices, including a Sony HD-EGS storage device, 1TB Transcend storage device, Toshiba storage device, Samsung mobile phone, Nokia N958GB, Blackberry mobile phone, and a Google IDEOS phone .

Others listed in the court order include a Samsung storage device (SPO802N), Remarkable tablet, Apple MacBook Pro, Seagate FreeAgent Desk external drive, ZTE mobile phone, 10 flash drives, and a Microcell memory card .

Justice Abdulmalik held that the anti-graft agency was entitled to examine the items seized during the investigation for forensic analysis, including the extraction of public documents, WhatsApp conversations, text messages, pictures, and call logs .

The ICPC operatives had recovered the devices during a search of El-Rufai’s residence at House 12, Mambilla Street, Aso Drive, Abuja, on February 19. The operation was conducted under a valid search warrant issued on February 18 and was witnessed by the former governor’s wife, Hadiza El-Rufai, and his son, Mohammed El-Rufai .

The former governor is concurrently pursuing a separate N1 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit before the same court, challenging the legality of the search and seeking the return of all seized items .
