US Military Drafts Escalatory Options for Potential Nigeria Intervention

In a significant geopolitical development, the United States military has drafted preliminary plans for a potential intervention in Nigeria. This follows statements from President Donald Trump alleging “Christian genocide” in the country and vowing to “take care of the terrorists.”

According to reports citing defense officials, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) has prepared three escalatory options for Washington’s review.

The “light” option involves “partner-enabled operations,” where the US would provide support and intelligence to Nigerian government forces targeting insurgent groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.

A “medium” option includes direct drone strikes on militant camps and convoys in northern Nigeria. However, this faces logistical hurdles since the US vacated its drone bases in neighboring Niger, which are now occupied by Russian forces.

The most significant “heavy” option would involve deploying an aircraft carrier group to the Gulf of Guinea and using fighter jets or long-range bombers to conduct strikes. Military officials noted that this was not considered a national security priority until recently.

The report highlights that any major military operation would be complex and likely ineffective without a large-scale, long-term commitment, with one retired general likening airstrikes alone to “pounding a pillow.” The Nigerian government has stated it welcomes international assistance but insists any action must respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
